One of the best shows of the year - by far - was the Buddy Guy / Jeff Beck double bill on a sweltering Virginia summer night at Wolf Trap in Vienna, VA. Buddy Guy opened for Jeff Beck on this tour, but it was much more like two full shows in one. Buddy and his band sounded great! I've seen Buddy a few times in the recent past and on this night, Buddy was in the groove. He limited the talking and one of the true blues legends played his guitar with a passion and an attitude that is hard to find, and you'd never guess he was 79 years old. It was clear though who the crowd was there to see, legendary guitarist Jeff Beck - touring in support of his brand new album - Loud Hailer, and fronting a new band: Carmen Vandenberg (guitar), Rosie Bones (vocals), Jonathan Joseph (drums), and Rhonda Smith (bass). Also appearing on vocals was Jimmy Hall of Wet Willie fame. Jeff and crew played a full set of both new and old music, wowing the crowd with Rosie's vocals, and Carmen's talented guitar work, both complimenting the wail of Jeff Beck's Stratocaster. It was a thrill to watch how Jeff has, yet again, reinvented himself. This was one memorable night.
